The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) and its partners are studying Exit 86 on Interstate 29 to determine what modifications might be needed at this interchange to accommodate future growth and traffic volumes.

Planning Study Goals

  • Develop an Interchange Modification Justification Report for the Federal Highway Administration
  • Create Environmental Screen Report and National Environmental Policy Act documents for future planning
  • Provide guidance to implement recommended improvements for future construction

Interchange Options

The project teams will be analyzing two interchange examples that were identified in the SDDOT 2020 Decennial Study. Additionally, up to two additional options will be identified and analyzed as part of the study.

Option 1 (Recommended Alternative): Standard Diamond Interchange

Option Two: Single Point Urban Exchange

Option Three:Diverging Diamond Interchange

The Study Area is located at the intersection of I-29 and 258th Street (Exit 86) near Renner and Crooks.

Timeline

Interchange modifications require various studies and screening reports. This project begins with data collection and analysis to help us develop and refine modification options. Next is the development of the Interchange Modification Justitification Report (IMJR) and Environmental Screening Report (ESR). A more detailed Environmental Analysis occurs during the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process. Lastly, an interchange design is finalized. This design will kick-off the construction phase of this project.
